Happy Birthday, My Leader

I turned sixty a zillion years ago, though you can’t tell it by my swagger – firm, confident and decisive. I am a full-fledged Nigerian. No shaking, even as the house burns.

In these many years past, on each of those birthdays that I rarely celebrate, I wonder if I have accomplished enough at the age I have attained. Have I really earned it? Am I still the basket case of my large extended family? Am I ahead or behind my age mates in primary school or my class mates in college, or my peers all over the world? These may be idle questions that occur to me in those rare moments of introspection that quickly follow whenever my children remind me that it’s my birthday again.

WITH rising greenhouse gas emissions, climate change is occurring at rates much faster than anticipated and its effects are being clearly felt worldwide.
 
Nigeria, as a developing country with a population of about 180 million, has been adversely impacted by climate change due to obvious vulnerability and low coping capability. Consequently, on December 12, 2015, during a United Nations-sponsored meeting in Paris, COP21, dubbed 'Paris Agreement', Nigeria joined 194 other countries to make a historic pledge to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

SDGs: Income inequality at the heart Nigeria’s poverty- Expert

Economic projections by experts show it would be a near impossibility for Nigeria to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 going by the current income inequalities in the country. Professor Ebere Onwudiwe, a distinguished Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Development in Abuja, said that results from research and development initiatives show that income inequality is the major cause of the high rate of poverty in Nigeria.

Professor Ebere Onwudiwe, publisher and Editorial Director of O-analytics Research and Development Initiative (ORADI), in this interview with Daily Trust at the weekend in Abuja, spoke on the threat of high unemployment rate in Nigeria and proffered solutions.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), says based on 2018 data, Nigeria has an estimated 23.1 percent unemployment rate which is an all-time high. How do you think this problem could be tackled vis- a-vis national security?
